I have been fired enough times to see when it is about to happen.
It comes from your manager.
The start by asking more and more questions about what you are doing each day.
Weekly checkins become daily or twice a day.
When they ask you and answer in a satisfying way it isn’t enough. They will ask you to fill it out in a spreadsheet or the latest productivity app the company uses so they can look it over a longer period.
This is around the time you should start looking for another job.
If you do this in a satisfying way, they will continue to ask you to explain what you are doing in different ways.
They will start to micromanage you. Asking to be in on your phone calls or stand around (or virtually screen share) while you get something done.
The work they give you nonsensical busy work. The most consistent one I have been told is to design and redesign the same things for no reason. There won’t be any hard metrics to really judge my work on and the feedback will be that it needs to look “busier.”
This period could take up to 6 months. I think the manager doesn’t fully realize they want to fire you yet either. They are trying to give themselves a concrete reason. In all likelihood they may simply just not like you anymore (or perhaps your salary).
